Backing up your one-time authenticator codes

Getting a new phone or having your old one crash doesn't have to mean losing your one-time codes. The most popular apps such as Google and Microsoft Authenticator let you back up your codes so you can easily restore them.

Google Authenticator Google syncs your codes directly to your Google Account.

  1. Open the Google Authenticator app.

  2. Tap your profile picture in the top right corner.

  3. Turn on the option to sync with your Google account.

You’ll see a green cloud icon when your backup is active. When you sign in to the app on a new device using the same account, your codes will appear automatically.

Microsoft Authenticator

  1. Open the Microsoft Authenticator app.

  2. Go to Settings.

  3. Turn on Cloud Backup (on Android) or iCloud Backup (on iOS).

  4. Sign in with your personal Microsoft account to store the backup.

When you install the app on a new phone, simply select Begin Recovery instead of adding an account, and sign in to restore your codes.
